Illusion of Control – audio
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
I have come to believe that we really have no control of the things in this life.
Why do I say that? Let us start by looking at James 4:13-15.
“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit, yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.“
Things just get away from us.
Time slips away in the short term.
- We had our Gospel Meeting
- Then I was tired
- Then it rained
Now it has been over two weeks since I mowed the lawn or looked in the garden – where did the time go?
Time slips away in longer periods.
Kim asked me last night if I had heard about someone we knew in college having a heart attack. When did people our age start having heart attacks?
Now we are working on estate planning and I recently attended a seminar on Social Security. I told Kim she has eight years before she needs to take a look at taking Social Security.
Wow, the plans we had in college are long gone and life has just happened.
Time gets away from all of us, so what should we do?
We need to take care of the important things first.
Let’s look at Matthew 6:31-33 to see what these are.
“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Have you taken care of the important things of eternal life? Or have you let the “eating”, the “drinking” and the “wearing” get in the way?
Decide right now to be right with God.
I emphasize the now.
We could go one by one, our mist evaporating in the sun, as we read in James at the beginning.
We go all at once, without warning.
Jesus was asked a question about his coming again in Matthew 24:3 “…What will be the sign of your coming and the close of the age?”
He answered in Matthew 24:36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.”
Take care of the salvation of your eternal soul.
Remove your sin from between you and God and reconcile with Him.

Decision Tree – Begin
Decision Tree
A decision tree can help you visualize where the choice you make in like can lead. Don’t just drift and arrive at a destination you would not have chosen.
As we go through life, we face many decisions.
- Some decisions are inconsequential. – What will I eat today? – What will I wear to work?
- Other decisions are life changing. – What kind of work will I do? – Who will I marry?
- A few decisions change more than just the life we live here on this earth. These are the decisions we need to consider right now.
Do you think about the consequences of your decisions?
Are you willing to start from the beginning and look at these critical decisions together? Will you accept the implications of your answers?
Perhaps you can use this process to see consequences before they happen and change your answers.
If you are willing to spend some time in honest consideration, let’s start at the beginning… If not, that is your decision; we all have free will, but it could lead to a consequence you would rather avoid.
Before whom will you confess Jesus today?
Thanks to Al Parr, working with the Saline Church of Christ, for the content of this post.John 9:21-22 – “But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.”
The parents of the man born blind, now healed by Jesus, were afraid to speak the truth about Jesus because they feared what the judges would do to them otherwise. Many continue in the same sin today. “He that sat upon the throne” (Revelation 21:5) said that “the fearful … shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 21:5).
“God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). Trust the power. Exhibit the love. Use the sound mind.
Read again Matthew 10:32-33, then answer the question – Before whom will you confess Jesus today?

Are You Running?
Thanks to Al Parr, working with the Saline Church of Christ, for the content of this post.Habakkuk 2:2 – “And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.”
Habakkuk lived in a time of violence, iniquity, grievance, spoiling, strife and contention (Habakkuk 1:3-4). God revealed to him that He was about to do something that the people wouldn’t believe if they heard it (Habakkuk 1:5). But hear it, they must.
Write it, Habakkuk! Write it upon tablets. Make it plain. God wants people to know His word. More than that, He wants people to act upon His word. They can’t do what they don’t know (Romans 10:14).
It’s still true. You can’t please God if you don’t read His word. The good news is, His word is plain. When you read you can understand (Ephesians 3:4), and when you understand you will be motivated to run for Him (Isaiah 55:11; Romans 10:17).
Are you running?

Is the Bible the Rule Book for the Church?
Thanks to Al Parr, working with the Saline Church of Christ, for the content of this post.2 Thessalonians 3:6 – “Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition that he received of us.”
Is the Bible the rule book for the church, or isn’t it?
We see everywhere today the results of the hijacking of churches by agents of change. It’s not entirely the fault of the hijackers! When people begin to teach in the church what was not taught by the apostles and recorded in the Bible, they must be stopped (Titus 1:11). When we make excuses against confronting them, we ourselves become contributors to the apostasy (1 John 1:11) that will surely result from all false teaching and practice.
How much plainer could the rule be?
The sentence includes the words “command,” “you,” “in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” “ye” and “every.” It’s not an option; it’s a direct order from your Master, and your response to it will be weighed in the final judgment day.
And how many other souls will be affected by your words and actions?

Salvation: Hear - Believe - Repent - Confess - Be Baptized - Live Faithfully
A Friend of the Father
Thanks to Johnny O. Trail from the Sycamore Chapel Church of Christ for the content of this post.Scripture calls Abraham a “friend of God.”
One such characterization is made of Abraham in James 2:21-24. The verses say, “Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” – and he was called a friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.” This description of Abraham is more significant than we sometimes think. The implication is that God was proud to call Abraham His friend.
Would God be proud to call you his friend?
A friend is “somebody who trusts and is fond of another.” “Somebody who thinks well of or is on good terms with somebody else.” Does God think well of you? Are you on good terms with Him? These thoughts are worthy of much consideration.
James’ words in James 2:21-24 could very well be an allusion to 2 Chronicles 20:7 which says, “Did you not, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend?” This passage promises to give the land to the descendants of Abraham. Again, Abraham is called God’s friend, but why?
Abraham was God’s friend because he was obedient to God’s commands.
Genesis 22:1-2 says, “After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” One would imagine that there was much trepidation that went along with this commandment. After all, this was Abraham’s only son according to the covenant promise of God. Moreover, there was an emotional toil that went along with this commandment from Jehovah. Most parents could not imagine being put in such a situation, but Abraham was.
It is incredible to consider, but Abraham was completely obedient to God’s will.
Genesis 22:9-12 “When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” God knew that Abraham was faithful, because he followed through with the commandment of God, knowing God was his friend. By the same token, God knows that we are faithful and are His friend when we follow through with all of His commandments – not just the ones we chose to obey.
Scripture teaches that obedience and faith are inseparably linked.
Hebrews 11:8; 17-19 says, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going…. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.” Abraham’s life was characterized by faithful works of obedience. If one wants God to call him His friend, he must be faithfully obedient to His commandments.
All people should want to be counted among God’s friends.
How does one do this?
John 15:14 says, “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” Once again, the importance of obeying God’s commands is underscored in this passage. The disobedient cannot be saved or counted among God’s friends.
Jesus is the Author, Source, Architect, and Originator of our salvation.
Who can be saved?
Only the obedient have the expectation of eternal life. Hebrews 5:8-9 says, “Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.” That is, Jesus learned the cost of obedience which was death upon a Roman cross at Calvary.
One must be obedient to the gospel in order to have eternal life.
2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 says, “In flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.” The obedient will be a friend of God and obey the gospel, but what is the gospel?
Simply stated, the gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:1-4, teaches, “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you – unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” How does one obey the gospel?
One obeys the gospel at the point of baptism. Romans 6:1-4 “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” Notice from these passages that baptism is likened unto a death, burial, and resurrection.
Would you be a friend of the Father?
If you would be His friend, you need to submit in faithful obedience to His will by observing and practicing all of His commands. All other friendships are worthless if God is not able to call us His friend.

Decision Tree – Reject God’s Word
(Did you jump into the middle of this? Please start at the beginning of the decision tree.)
Your sin continues to separate you from God. You have heard God’s Word, but rejected His instruction. There is nothing else that can save you. Perhaps you will have time to reconsider, but that is really not in your hands.
Perhaps you will continue to live, but perhaps not.
It is not really in your hands (James 4:14, Hebrews 9:27), but select a path and see what comes next.
Decision Tree – Reject God’s Word
(Did you jump into the middle of this? Please start at the beginning of the decision tree.)
Your sin continues to separate you from God. You have heard God’s Word, but reject His instruction. There is nothing else that can save you. Only hearing God’s Word can lead to you believing (Romans 10:17). Your only hope is to go back and make different decisions.
Perhaps you will have time to reconsider, but that is really not in your hands.
Perhaps you will continue to live, but perhaps not.
It is not really in your hands (James 4:14, Hebrews 9:27), but select a path and see what comes next.
Decision Tree – Give Up
(Did you jump into the middle of this? Please start at the beginning of the decision tree.)
You are now fallen away from Christ and in a worse state than before you had heard God’s Word (2 Peter 2:20-21; Hebrews 12:25). By rejecting Him at this point, there is nothing else that can save you. You already know that only He can save you.
You are Lost Again! What will you do?
More on giving up:
Decision Tree – Reject God’s Word
(Did you jump into the middle of this? Please start at the beginning of the decision tree.)
Refusing to be baptized is really an indication that you don’t truly believe. If you really believe that God is your creator, and wants what is best for you, why would you reject His instruction? Your sin continues to separate you from God. You have heard God’s Word, but rejected His instruction. There is nothing else that can save you. Perhaps you will have time to reconsider and be immersed for the forgiveness of your sin, but that is really not in your hands.

Decision Tree – Truly Believe
(Did you jump into the middle of this? Please start at the beginning of the decision tree.)
Refusing to repent is really an indication that you don’t truly believe. If you really believe that God is your creator and wants what is best for you, why would you reject His instruction to be baptized? Remember, just having an intellectual “belief” will do you no good. Your sin continues to separate you from God and you need a belief that will lead to action to take your sin out of the way.
James 2:17-24 expounds on how works complete faith, resulting in true belief. James 2:26 sums it up this way, “or as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also“.
Now, be honest and decide if you believe what in God says.

Why Teach The Bible?
God has given us his inspired word!
Certainly he has the power and understanding to say what he means and mean what he says! To know what God desires go to the Bible, not the teaching that mankind has invented. God warns us that false teachers are coming
- Matthew 7:15 admonishes, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.“
- 1 John 4:1 states, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.“
- 2 Timothy 3:13 warns, “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.“
Only the Bible can make us wise unto salvation
In 2 Timothy 3:14-17, we are told, “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” For salvation, follow the Bible, not mankind.
- Matthew 15:8-9 shows why we can’t follow the doctrines of men – they are vain. “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.“
- We have to go to the Bible to find the commandments of God. Mark 7:6-7 repeats this warning! “This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.“
Don’t remain ignorant. We need salvation and judgment is coming
- Acts 17:30-31 tells us we can’t remain ignorant, but must come to repentance, “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.“
- John 12:48 tells us that the word of God will judge us. “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.“
Do you know Jesus? Are you sure?
Some people think that they can’t know for sure. The Bible teaches us that we can in 1 John 2:3-5 , “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.” We need the Bible to teach us his commandments.
Why teach the Bible? Look at what it does!
- Makes us wise unto salvation
- Teaches us saving doctrine
- Corrects us when we are wrong
- Furnishes us unto all good works
- Teaches us how to know that we know Jesus
- Will Judge us

Observations on a Sunday Flea Market – audio
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
A flea market is not a bad thing.
In fact, it can be fun to mix with people, eat some junk food (some people call it fair food) and shop for stuff you really don’t need. But should this be a higher priority than meeting to worship with the Lord’s Church?
Sunday, September 16th, was a big Gahanna Flea Market.
The flea market was already booming as we passed through Gahanna at 9:00 Sunday morning and it made me sad to think all these people would come to a flea market instead of worshiping God. Here are some pictures I took on the way home.
For the sake of stuff, many are entering the wide gate that leads to destruction – Matthew 7:13-14
Instead, their feet need to follow a different way, accepting direction from the Lord – Jeremiah 10:23-24
Only by giving stuff up and valuing the Lord will we be of value to the Lord.
When Jesus comes again, will we have valued Him as treasure? – Matthew 13:44
Will he find us just and find value in us? Will he find us to be:
- A Pearl of Great Price – Matthew 13:45-46
- Good – Matthew 13:47-48
At the end of the world, the wicked will be severed from the just and cast away – Matthew 13:49-50
Will you be numbered with the wicked or the just?
Are you holding on to your stuff instead of to the Lord?
If you don’t like your answer, now is the time to change – 2 Corinthians 6:2
Let us know if we can help you begin or improve your Christian walk…
Decision Tree – Closing Comments
(Did you jump into the middle of this? Please start at the beginning of the decision tree.)
I admit it, I think like a programmer.
When the Gospel was presented to me, and I set aside my preconceived notions and was open to seeing how everything presented in the Bible fits together, it was perfectly logical. The testimony of the complexity of the world lead me to decide that creation was more reasonable than evolution (which never explains where matter comes from). So if creation is true, who is the creator? The Bible explains who that creator is and what he wants for us and from us.
A Logical Decision (an abbreviated view)
if You Exist then
| Life (conception, birth, childhood)
| if Life then
| | Adulthood
| | if Adulthood then
| | | Seek God (His way…)
| | else
| | | No Hope
| | end-if
| else
| end-if
else
| You Never Existed (but you do, take the other path)
end-if.
He gave us free will, and wants us to decide to come to him (1 Timothy 2:4-6).
He presents a path for us to follow to do so, but there is only one set of decisions that lead to Him. He will guide us along the way if we will accept His guidance and follow His path. I encourage you to start where you are today and make reasonable, logical decisions.
